Here's one secret that freelance writing prospects won't tell you (unless you bring it up first)

Last week, I sent an email to a potential client and they responded with “Perfect timing! We’ve been meaning to revise our website for quite some time now.”

And the thing is, I get messages like that all the time. Whenever I reach out to prospects, there will always be people who would get back to me saying something like, “Oh content has actually been in the back of our minds for a while now, we just haven’t gotten around to advertising it yet.”

Getting variations of that same message time and time again made me realize that companies actually know that they need a writer… they’re just not actively broadcasting it to the world.

Content, especially in this day and age, is extremely important. Business websites need to be in top shape, blogs have to be written, and presentations need to get done. Companies are aware of this, but often, other business issues may push writing or hiring a writer to the bottom of their to-do lists. That’s why it’s up to you to approach these clients and remind them of that need.

Remember that just because there isn’t a “help wanted” sign posted on the company’s doors doesn’t mean you aren’t needed. Don’t assume that they don’t need a writer. Most of them do, and they would be willing to hear you out.

So be proactive when finding clients. Go out there and approach them yourself. You might be surprised to learn that you’re just the person they’re looking for.
